For the past week or so I have been making time to work on a new theme for this blog.
We software engineers can’t go for very long without making changes to our websites 😁 Be it the software running the site behind it (yes, I have done this several times) or the theme, the visual aspect, the user interface (what I’ve done this time). It’s inevitable it’s a matter of when not why 🤭
I’m not a designer so I try to find inspiration on other blogs 🕵️♂️ and incorporate what works for me, for my content. I’ve done my best to keep it simple (not easy!).
This time I have aimed for a pure dark theme (no light option). The theme looks similar but has fewer elements. I tried to put focus on what’s important, the content. You tell me if I succeeded.
Typography is of course different, because why not. It’s now bigger (you can always zoom in/out with the browser if it’s not to your liking) ❤️
I feel the need for speed 🚀
The site should be more performant too. The page is now slimmer and I’ve made the effort to incorporate web performance recommendations to speed things up. Mostly for mobile and slow connections. You probably won’t see a difference loading the site from a high performant desktop and fiber internet.
Web developer’s life 👨💻
I’ve enjoyed the process of creating a design for myself, from scratch. Doing all this doesn’t mean I’ll write better content but it will probably make me want to write more (sorry, dear reader 🙇♂️ ).
I am amazed how very famous and big blog names go years without design updates. They look super old, hardly mobile-optimized, and are not super fast. Yet they have hundreds or thousands of readers. Yet another indication that content is king, not design.
Do you like the new design?
